While studying for my MA in Contemporary Art Theory at Goldsmiths, I was invited to take over the Visual Cultures Society Instagram account between the 2nd and 8th December 2019 to document two exhibitions of my choice here in London: Anselm Kiefer: Superstrings, Runes, The Norns, Gordian Knot at White Cube Bermondsey and Eco-Visionaries: Confronting a planet in a state of emergency at the Royal Academy.
The captions I wrote speak for themselves: I decided to focus on two different exhibitions – a solo vs. group show – held in two different settings, one in a commercial gallery and the other in a major institution.
At the White Cube, 16 large-scale paintings and a central installation comprised of 30 four-metre-high vitrines were spread across the entire gallery space and overwhelmed you with themes of history, astronomy, and mythology.
At the RA, 21 works in the medium of film, installation, photography, and architectural models looked at the consequences our daily actions cause to the planet. Featuring works by Olafur Eliasson, Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, and Unknown Fields among others, each one invited us to put nature’s needs before ours and suggested innovative approaches to intervene in order to reshape a better relationship between humans & the natural world.
